Preacher's Bio

We are saved not by what we do, but by what Christ has done!

Every christian and every church group should try to do something for God that is so utterly impossible; that if God doesn't intervene it will ultimately fail:President Abraham Lincoln.

God impressed upon the hearts of Ken Smith(preacher) and his wife Bonnie Lou, to sell their home in Fairfax, VA and start a church in Winchester in September of 1970. They purchased 2.5 acres of land on a hill in an old apple orchard about one mile west of Winchester, VA on Rt. 50 West and a small home in Sunnyside. Again by faith, they sold their home in Sunnyside and used the money to finance construction of the new church. Their new home, a 10x52 ft. trailer was located on the property and housed the pastor, his wife and children, Christy and K.H. plus their cat and dog. Living on the property where the church was to be erected enabled the preacher to come home from his job at Wilson's Building Service and work until after dark. The first ground breaking at Rosedale was in September 1971. The first service was held on March 12, 1972, consisting of seven people.

Since then, under the continued leadership of Dr. Ken Smith, many have accepted Christ as their savior and God has blessed and taught the faithful. to God be the Glory, great things he hath done! The church ministries have grown to include an adult choir, missions, Rosedale Christian Academy K-12, bus ministry, Rosedale Kiddie Kollege, puppet ministry, tape ministry, juniors ministry, youth department, lord's ladies, bible study, nursery ministry, and deaf ministry. "call unto me I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not" Jeremiah 33:3.

January 2003 God spoke to the heart of Ken and Bonnie Lou Smith saying, "You have accomplished great things since 1971, when I sent you here with two young children; Christy was 9 and K.H. was 5, and 2.5 acres of property. "In 32 years, WE have grown the 2.5 acres to 8.5 acres adding a campus of 7 building projects totaling over 5 million dollars. all WE have here is paid for and there is over $150 thousand in the bank. I'M proud of our accomplishments.

Now it is time to ask you two; if you will allow ME to use you once again? There is a 23 acre tract of land in Clearbrook, VA. It has been land locked since 1964. I need you to develop the property for ME: I have spoken to Jeff and Roseanna Jenkins. They will donate 8 acres and WE can purchase the remaining 15 acres to complete the deal. Will the two of you start another church for ME?

Ken and Bonnie Lou resigned and on August 3, 2003 Open Door Baptist Church held their first service in a 40'x60' building located at the Candy Hill Camp Ground. The building did not have any heat or A/C, or indoor plumbing. We used a space heater and rented a Johnny Blue for an outside toilet.

On October 5, 2004 ODBC officially became an organized independent Baptist church with 146 charter members. A 40'x60' addition with kitchen, office space, rest room, nursery, and dining hall was added. Also electric heaters and window A/C units were installed.

Moving Forward to 2010... A 2.5 acre lake, and a 100'x60' cross. Water and sewer lines have been put in place under Rt. 11 across 1200 feet of field and under I-81; reaching the 23 acres owned by ODBC. The bulk of the above has been paid for. we are expecting V-DOT to install a service road from Hopewell Rd to ODBC property in the near future.

In August of 2012, GOD supplied Open Door Baptist Church with a permanent right of way, praise GOD. We started back to work and now have an 18,800 sq. ft. pre-fabricated building. The building is now under roof and some of the curb and guttering completed...and PEOPLE WERE SAVED!

We will begin with an auditorium seating 500 people and Sunday school rooms for all ages.

Plans for the 23 acres include, a cemetary (several sites have already been filled, burials were in 2007); a youth camp during the summer; a couples retreat; a conference center; and a complex to house the elderly. We truly believe the Lord Jesus when He Said" ... with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Matthew 19b. Then Jesus added," Therefore I say unto you, what thing soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." Mark 11:24

What can you do to help with our Lord's work? 1) be positively sure you are saved:" Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves." II Corinthians 13:5 2) "Pray without ceasing" 1 Thes 5:17 "Brethren, Pray for us." 1 Thes 5:25 3) When our Lord speaks to your heart about helping us financially; be obedient;"...whatsoever He saith unto you, do it" John 2:5b

May God richly bless you is our prayer, Pastor Ken & Bonnie Lou and The People of Open Door Baptist Church
